Legislation amending O.C.G.A. 16-12-60 (f) has been sent
to Senator Harp and the other members of the Columbus
Legislative Delegation. The legislation would increase the
amounts that non profit organizations can award during
bingo sessions. Currently the law allows only $1,500 per
calendar day and $3,000 per calendar week. Fort Benning
and Alabama have no restrictions on the amounts they can
award. The American Legion, AMVETS, Disabled American
Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Southern
States Police and Veterans are sponsors of this change in
Georgia law. In addition to Columbus, non-profit bingo, we are being joined by
other police and veterans organizations from across Georgia
in this effort. |

Seth Harp notified the President via E-Mail on 02/14/06
that the bill to amend O.C.G.A. 16-12-60 (f). His message
stated: " We discussed your bill in the Columbus Caucus".
"it was the agreement of all members of the caucus
that this would not be taken up by the legislature this
year." "We all agreed to try next year".
" This does not mean that we do not support the bill
but that it has no means of passing this year".
The delegation did not keep its promise. In 2007, we ask
them again to amend the code section on prize awards. Again
they ignored us. |

Our respective legislative committees will be meeting to
discuss the lack of support by our delegation's on this
issue and to review each member's record on just how much
support that they have shown for peace officers and
veterans of the 15th and 29th Senate Districts and the
House Districts 129 through 132. We will work to get
primary challengers to each of these districts in 2008. |

Senator Harp in a letter dated 17 October 2007, has
agreed to co-sponsor legislation to lift the prize award cap
on non-profits who operate bingo. The coalition leadership
will be in contact with the leadership of both the Columbus
House and Senate Delegations to draft the appropriate
legislation to fix this problem permanently. Check
your local chapter, lodge, post, web site for updates. |

Vote Tuesday November 2006 |
Elected officials are important to
our members and the Georgia law enforcement community. Because we
are public officers, we are dependant upon our elected officials at
all levels of Georgia government for support. As our members cannot
personally meet with each individual candidate, our
legislative-governmental affairs committee strives to learn the
position of each candidate on the issues of interest to our members,
the Georgia law enforcement and military communities and the voters
at large and make recommendations as to which candidate we believe
will best represent and support our interests.
