Veterans Coalition

LODGE BREAKING NEWS
Checking the candidates' facts
GOP Incumbents will face challengers in November 2008. The Five
challengers all are prior military service and together have a
combined 75 years of military service.
Where is our future?
How our politicians of both
parties fail both military veterans and peace officers and
what we can do to to stop it. Statistics indicate that older
citizens are likely to vote three time more often than younger
citizens. Since peace officers and military veterans are microcosms
of our community, we believe that we can assume that these
statistics also apply to us. So ask yourself: If you're the
politician, would you look after the 20% you never here from-or the
80 % who vote, call, visit or write to you and organize lobbies to
influence you? Silent voters almost never prevail. The Southern
States Police and Veterans wants rank and file peace officers and
veterans to find their voice and become a vital part of the
political action. Let's hold our local politicians accountable for
their action or lack of action on peace officers and veterans
issues. Visit
www.g-cops.org/voterguide/index.htm to find out who
supports you and who don't. Then vote accordingly in 2008.

Term Limits for Mayor and
Council.
The time has come for us to
consider placing term limits on our Columbus elected officials.
Educate yourself about term limits and why its become important to
get rid of politicians who are only serving their own interest or
those of their friends and not the average citizen. A good place to
begin the discussion and learn what you can do to change the
political environment of Columbus is by visiting

Bob Hydrick's Commentary,
Sunday May 8, 2005 Columbus Ledger-Enquirer.
What can I say? Well, I say
our former mayor has it exactly right. So lets think outside of the
box! As I have recommended to some on council, including the mayor,
we can put the issue back to the voters in a referendum with
language that would spell out clearly the purposes that the one-cent
sales tax could be used for. The only two uses allowed under this
plan would be for purposes of Public Services and Public Safety. We
need to put the brakes on all of this nonsense of trying to keep up
with other cities in Georgia and around the world. If the mayor,
council and their special interest friends want to have a bike
trail, hotel rooms and whatever other big ideas they can come up
with, let them form an investment cartel and use their own money to
invest in these projects. One other fact that Bob didn't mention and
that is the complete lack of business acumen on part of this
mayor/council who have been managing our affairs for years. The time
has come to fire them and bring in a new management team.
Ed Richards currently serves in the VFW Action Corp,
as Chairman of Legislative Affairs for VFW Post 12002 and the 5th
District, Department of Georgia. President Bush has issued his
proposed budget request for 2006. The VFW's Legislative Action Alert
says veterans Health Care and Benefits:
"Brink of Disaster". The Corp is calling upon all VFW Members
and the members of other veterans organizations to contact
their representatives and express their outrage. The president's VA
budget proposal would cause 220,000 veterans to stop receiving
treatment at VA hospitals. 28,000 fewer veterans would not get
long-term care such as nursing home care. Over 3,000 healthcare
personnel would be eliminated in an already understaffed health care
environment. Hundreds of thousands of veterans would have to pay
hundreds of extra dollars out of their own pocket because of
increased co-payments and enrollment fees.
What can you do to fight this battle?
Write your Elected Officials by clicking on links on
the index tab or call and tell your Congressman/Senators that you
are outraged with the President's budget for veterans healthcare.
Let them know of the devastating effect this budget would have on
veterans depending on their earned healthcare. Inform them that you
expect the congress to fully fund the VA healthcare system, by
providing the $3.4 billion more than the President requested. This
amount is called for by the VFW and the Independent Budget. Your
representatives care about what their constituents think. With your
efforts, we can make a difference in the lives of veterans who have
sacrificed much on behalf of the citizens of this great country.
